TOUCHING THE EARTH LIGHTLY
Our guiding principle is simple: protect and honour the Okavango Delta. Sustainability isn’t a checklist, it’s our way of life. From the way we power the lodge to the way we source ingredients, every detail reflects our belief that true luxury and environmental care belong together. Set within a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this extraordinary ecosystem calls for deep respect and we answer with thoughtful, lasting action.
Solar Powered Living
Our lodge runs on 92% solar energy via a cutting-edge photovoltaic system. Hot water comes from thermodynamic geysers. Water is purified and re-mineralised through advanced reverse osmosis systems, making it safe to drink throughout the lodge.
Zero Waste, Real Impact
We operate without single-use plastics. All organic waste is composted onsite to support local gardens and reduce landfill impact. Every decision—from materials to menus—aims to reduce our environmental footprint.
Sustainable by Design
From the lodge’s elevated structure that allows floodwaters to flow naturally, to the handpicked materials that reflect and respect the landscape, every detail of Xigera was designed to live in harmony with the Delta.
CONSERVATION IN ACTION
Protecting Botswana’s biodiversity is core to our mission. We work alongside experts and organisations to protect this remarkable ecosystem now and for generations to come.
- Wild Entrust: Our cornerstone conservation partner, this Botswana-based NGO combines applied science, education, and sustainable development to protect wildlife and habitats.
- AI & Wildlife Monitoring: We use cutting-edge, non-invasive technology to monitor key predator populations.
- Giraffe Conservation: In partnership with the Giraffe Conservation Foundation, we help track genetic hybridisation in local populations.
- Raptors Botswana & Crane Conservation: We support endangered birds of prey and wattle crane conservation efforts.
- Anti-Poaching Support: Xigera collaborates with Botswana’s Department of Wildlife and National Parks to monitor wildlife activity and support anti-poaching initiatives.
- EcoExist: Seek to reduce conflict and foster coexistence between elephants and people.
- Elephant Havens: Guests can visit Botswana’s only elephant orphanage through Helicopter Horizons, contributing directly to their rescue and rewilding mission.
TOURISM AS A FORCE FOR GOOD
Sustainability is not just about the environment. It’s also about people. We believe tourism can be a powerful agent of change, empowering communities and shaping futures.
- Empowering Through Employment: The majority of our team is proudly Botswanan. Through leadership development, global hospitality exchanges, and local skills training, we’re nurturing the next generation of African hospitality leaders.
- Habu Village Partnership: We support this nearby community through sustainable farming, education, and wildlife coexistence projects, in collaboration with Wild Entrust Africa.
- Village Lights & Learning: Solar-powered lights and conservation learning materials are distributed to Habu schoolchildren, improving study conditions and environmental awareness.
- Coaching Conservation: Through play-based programmes like BushRAP and Animal RAP, students engage in conservation lessons rooted in empathy, self-respect, and wildlife awareness.
- Caring for Elders: Our team volunteers with the Polokong Centre in Maun, providing essential supplies and care to the elderly.
- Sustainable Creativity: Many pieces in our art collection are crafted from recycled or foraged materials. Through hosted and self-guided art tours, guests explore the intersection of beauty and sustainability.
FOOD ROOTED IN PLACE, MADE WITH PURPOSE
Here, food isn’t just about taste, its rooted in season, shaped by sustainability, and rich with meaning.
- Radius Cooking with Purpose: We source locally and ethically. Over 90% of our fresh produce comes from Maun, just 60 miles away. We support small-scale farmers, ethical meat producers, and local co-operatives.
- Partners in Produce: From hydroponic farms like Bellfrog to community-run egg farms, every partner shares our values of sustainability, quality, and care.
- A Celebration of Culture and Craft: Ingredients like wild Kalahari truffles and sorghum reflect both tradition and terroir. Every dish is a tribute to the land and those who nourish it.
