January is the mid-point of the ’emerald season’ in the Delta as the rains spread a vast, velvety blanket of green over the plains around the lodge, drawing large groups of impala, red lechwe, wildebeest and other animals out to eat. Over the month, our guides closely followed a drama of dominance unfold, as two different coalitions of male lions roamed the region in pursuit of a takeover from our two resident lions, Pretty Boy and Raboko. The established males restricted themselves to the eastern side of the concession, where they focused their attention on mating with the area’s lionesses. The newcomers meanwhile made themselves very comfortable on the lodge’s airstrip, forming an unusual welcoming committee for arriving guests.
